The South Shore Professional Firefighter’s Local is currently made up of 60 active members. The South Shore Fire Department administration staff consists of the Fire Chief, Assistant Chief, two Bureau Chiefs, three Battalion Chiefs (one for each shift), and an Administrative Assistant. The “Line Firefighters” and the Battalion Chiefs work 24 hours on/48 hours off, on a continuous cycle, averaging 56 hours per week. The Fire Chief, Assistant Chief, Bureau Chiefs, and Administrative Assistant all work Monday-Friday, 40 hours per week.
The South Shore Fire Department currently operates out of 4 stations. We provide 911 service to Mt. Pleasant and Sturtevant. The area that we service is approximately 36 square miles. On average we respond to approximately 6400+ calls for service per year. The South Shore Fire Department is a consolidated department. In January of 2009, both the Sturtevant Fire Department and the Mt Pleasant Fire Department combined to create what is now the South Shore Fire Department.
The SSFD is also home to an established TRT (Technical Response Team), of which department members are trained to the technician level in Rope Rescue, Structural Collapse, Trench Rescue, Confined Space Rescue and Hazardous Materials Response. The addition of multiple department members to the Racine County Dive Team is currently in progress as well.
Members of the South Shore Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 2939 are highly trained and exceptionally dedicated individuals who are forever committed to providing the best care, training and response not only to the residents of the communities they serve, but also to the neighboring communities through the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (M.A.B.A.S.). A strong belief of shared training and services has been established throughout the years, providing an even higher level of communication and joint response throughout Racine and Kenosha Counties. For more information, please visit the Village of Mt Pleasant website.
New as of 2025, the South Shore Fire Department runs a fire academy for new recruits with the Caledonia and Racine Fire Departmens. The academy utilizes the 3 departments' current members to teach the new recruits how to become a full time firefighter.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude for your continued support, trust, and partnership. It is an honor to serve you; not only in times of emergency, but every day.
South Shote Professional Firefighters are committed to protecting what matters most: life, safety, and the future of our community. My focus has remained clear: to uphold our members’ rights to fair wages, equitable pay, and safe working conditions so we can serve with professionalism and dedication.
Every shift, our firefighters respond to emergencies with a deep sense of responsibility. We train relentlessly and stand ready 24/7 because you, our neighbors, friends, and community, are the reason we proudly wear this uniform.
As the job grows more complex, our commitment remains unwavering. Since taking our oath, we have stood ready to meet every challenge in service to you.
